Meet the Founder

I'm Nina - what you don't know, you don't know.

Founder of Black Women in Menopause

Nina is passionate about empowering people to take back control of their lives by understanding how they can improve their physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.

Take a look at Nina who recently featured in a short film which was launched alongside the release of new research from Women in Sport on menopause and midlife.

Nina started Black Women in Menopause because, as a black woman, she discovered there was a huge gap in the information available. Menopause happens to all women - it is a natural part of their lives.
Nina’s passion stems from her own menopause travels. After trawling the web, she identified the lack of diversity in the information available from media outlets and the fact that few high profile black women have shared their own experiences.

There are great platforms out there that provide information about the menopause, but black women’s experiences might not be shared by women from different cultures - for example changes to hair and skin.

This has led Nina on a journey during which she has learned (and continues to learn) so much along the way that she wanted to share her experiences in the hope that other black women would not feel alone. Her aim is to make people more aware of the diversity of menopausal experience across ethnic groups.
This is given by an online Community for black people to connect with each other and have a safe space to share their experiences about menopause and support each other. Women are suffering in silence and we need to break this taboo, menopause isn’t the end it’s a new beginning.

Nina also has a particular passion for health and nutrition with a focus on evidence-based intervention design, development and implementation. She has over 25 years of experience in the health, exercise and nutrition industry. Nina is a board member for Hwupenyu Health and Wellbeing Project, which is a charity based in Glasgow. They provide support for Black ethnic communities in Scotland living with chronic health conditions.

"Our biology may be the same, though our lived expereinces are not. We can not validate menopausal experiences on one group that is constantly represented in mainstream media."
